From 2009, though this year's race will be tomorrow. And just for the record, I never streaked the race! Back in my running and jogging days, I ran in several editions of the Bay to Breakers Footrace in San Francisco. Back then, the race often experienced record numbers of entrants, and lived up to its name as the world's largest footrace. It begins at the foot of San Francisco Bay, then winds through the streets of the City, through Golden Gate Park, and finally onto the Great Highway and the Pacific Ocean (ie the breakers). The first race, known as the Cross City Race, began in 1912, as a precursor ... read more

The oldest fast food joints that I have visited (from Lovefood): Back in Lodi again: California is jam-packed with historic fast food restaurants, and the state is home to the oldest operating McDonald's and In-N-Out Burger restaurants. Its oldest chain, though, is url=http://awrestaurants.com/blog/it-all-started-roadside-stand-roots-aw-restaurants?fbclid=IwAR2iqIdS326MkwhvjM-Zsg-dxOqdqfmzDQ14QqIv3PQrqznVsf7wywJsa4IA&W, which started as a root beer stand in Lodi in 1919. That original roadside stand is long gone (though it is marked with a plaque). But A&W’s history is celebrated at the current Lodi location, which displays plenty of old memorabilia and regularly hosts classic car meet-ups. We often went after baseball practice. I spent a summer playing baseball in Lodi while I was in college. I can hear CCR singing their famous song! On the islands, you must try Rainbow... read more

Well it probably won’t be a gold rush but we are rushing off to see our friend, Bobbi. We met Bobbi when we went to Africa in 2005 and have remained friends ever since. Our international travels have scored us some really wonderful friends. Jane & I will arrive in Santa Rosa about noon on Sunday and from there it will be almost non-stop. We will tarry in places like wineries, breweries, coastal towns, state parks, etc. etc. Or just hang out with Bobbi’s tortoises! Yosemite Park was on our list of want-tos but the park is still not officially open due to snow on the high mountain roads. There is so much to see and do in California that I’m sure we won’t miss out even if we don’t get to Yosemite.... read more

After getting back to the RV last night, Ray proceeded to input photos to the blog. As you may have noticed, there were no captions with the pictures. He said that he had been over served, and that I was lucky the pictures got in! It was a fun night, and great to be having diner out. There were many laughs throughout the evening, many of them at my expense. After breakfast this morning, Ray needed to dump the RV's tanks. As he was doing this, Raymond asked if he could show him how it's done, so he went over to his RV. They must have Conan working at the factory tightening up the dump tank cover. He worked on this thing for a good 10 minutes, and it wouldn't budge. Ray remembered his Navy days, ... read more

Heading north

We started our day bright and early as Ray had to walk to pick up the rental car for 8:30. Raymond offered to take the stroll with him while I finished getting everything ready. We headed out, and were quite surprised when we approached the West Entrance to Yellowstone and saw that there were three long lines of vehicles waiting to get in. The line moved quickly however, and before we knew it we were on our way. About two miles up the road traffic came to a stand still and we wondered if perhaps there was an accident. No, it was just a herd of buffalo gathered and slowly crossing the road. There were two groups, one meandering on each side of the road so the cameras were at the ready and we got many ... read more

Today we were heading to Seward to pick up our cruise ship. The train left at 6:45am. so we needed to be packed up and waiting for our taxi before 6am. The taxi arrived at 5:50am and we headed to the train depot. Unlike the other train trip, this one was crowded! There was a long line, out the door, and then weaving back and forth inside. We finally got our tickets and boarded the train. We were in Car C, seats 2 & 3. They weren't bad seats, but I wish we had the two in front of us, since those seats had a table. The car layout was similar to the trip from Fairbanks, except the cafeteria car in front of us had some balcony type seating, where you could sit and watch the ... read more

Up and out this morning by 8:00 with a quick stop at the Walmart up the road. Several items were missing from our on line pick up order and we thought we'd pick them up while we had the chance. The one thing we have all noticed is just how friendly everyone is in this section of the country. They will go out of their way to help you in any way they can, really nice, just like home...not. We have been in touch with the Great Alaska Spring Adventure group and everyone is concerned with the fires that are active in the British Columbia area. Our original plan was to head to Dawson Creek from Jasper to pick up the Alaskan Highway (Alcan), but if things don't change, we will head West and pick up ... read more
Climbing the mountain

Woke up to a cool, but glorious morning. The sun is shining and the sky is clear, a perfect day for touring Yellowstone National Park. We stopped last night in Wapiti, WY at Green Creek RV Park . It was a small, but clean park and it had this very unusual structure at the top of one of the hills on the property. It looked like a cross between a castle and a pagoda. Someone had obviously put a lot of time into it, but it was never completed. Ray later inquired about it and was told is is called The Smith Mansion. It was never completed because the builder fell to his death while building it. After setting up, Raymond went to do laundry while I made potato salad to go with dinner. We had ... read more

By 7am we were up, dressed and heading towards the People Mover bus stop. Fortuately it was just a few blocks down the road the motel was on, and then a couple blocks to the right. On the way there, we spotted Fred Myers and a number of others stores, and decided we'd stop there on the way back. Just like in Fairbanks, we lucked out and found out that the bus ride was free today, to seniors over 60. After a couple miles, and a good number of stops, we reached the downtown station. We'd already decided we were going to take a trolley tour, so we asked for directions to the Visitor Center. Just a few blocks away, we found it, and the trolley starting place too, right next door. We went inside to ... read more
