By 7am we were up, dressed and heading towards the People Mover bus stop. Fortuately it was just a few blocks down the road the motel was on, and then a couple blocks to the right. On the way there, we spotted Fred Myers and a number of others stores, and decided we'd stop there on the way back. Just like in Fairbanks, we lucked out and found out that the bus ride was free today, to seniors over 60. After a couple miles, and a good number of stops, we reached the downtown station. We'd already decided we were going to take a trolley tour, so we asked for directions to the Visitor Center. Just a few blocks away, we found it, and the trolley starting place too, right next door. We went inside to ... read more

We woke up about 6am and packed up. Manoli called for a taxi for 7:30am, and we waited around. Just before 7:30 the taxi showed up, we loaded up and away we went. As you probably already know, if you been reading my blogs up til now, today we were going to Anchorage by train. We reached the depot around 7:45, picked up our tickets, and waited again. While we waited, we checked out the neat model railroad display. It was very realistic, and the guy that managed the display was very informative. Our train was supposed to leave at 8:20am, and about 10 mins before, they open the gates and we boarded. We had seats in car D, the back car of the train. We had checked our luggage bags, and Manoli checked her backpack ... read more

I got a very good night's sleep, but I think Manoli got up at 4am. I guess its due to her habit of getting up at 6 or 7 in the morning back home. We checked the bus schedule, had a cup of coffee, and headed out the door. Today we're going to the North Pole.... Alaska, but by bus instead of walking, which is a good thing since the town is like 50 miles from Fairbanks. We got to the bus stop about 10 minutes early, and waited. Soon enough, along came the bus. We'd already found out that as seniors, we could ride the bus for free! Fairbanks uses a series of colors for the bus lines, Orange, Green, Red, Purple, Gery, and Blue. We were taking the Green line to downtown at the ... read more

I slept pretty well last night, waking up at about 7:30am or so. My wife woke up at 4am, hoping to see the Northern Lights, but was disappointed again. Well, we have 2 more nights to hope. Today we planned on visiting the Museum of the North, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Again, since there was no bus, we planned on walking there. We left the hostel around 9am, and walked down College Road to University Ave., then followed the phone up and around to the museum. We probably could have taken an easier/shorter route, but we didn't know. There were some nice views along the way. We reached the museum, paid our $16 each entry fee, for seniors, and started our tour. The museum is pretty big, with some cool stuff about history and ... read more

Manoli had heard that last night you could possibly see the Northern Lights, if it was clear enough, so she stayed up late to see. Unfortunately it wasn't clear enough. We planned on taking a bus to see the Wildlife place and then go downtown, but, unfortunately, the busses didn't run on Saturday or Sunday. I wish I had realized that, cause I would have tried to rent a car from Avis/Budget, for Saturday through maybe Monday or Tuesday. Instead, we decided to walk as far as we could, and see as much as we could. Manoli woke me up about 9am, we got dressed and headed out. The main drag, College Road, that the hostel was very close to is the one with the wildlife center, among other things. We headed towards downtown, and very ... read more

I didn't see much use in taking photos on your way to Fairbanks, so I'll just give you a brief description of the trip. We packed up and were on our way to GSP. Our daughter, Serena, took us there in her car, arriving at about 8am for our 10:50am flight. They called our boarding class on time and we were off to O'Hare International. We landed a little early and headed to Terminal 3E, gate 11, for our next connection, to Fairbanks, Alaska. O'Hare is gigantic, as expected, so the supposed 20 minute walk to the gate was not an exageration. Since our boarding time was in about 4 hours, and it was lunch time, we stopped at McDonalds for a Big Mac and fries. After eating lunch we found out our flight was going ... read more

Well, it's that time again, time for our annual vacation. This year we are going to Alaska and Vancouver, Canada. We fly out of Greenville, SC on Friday, May 10th, and stop at O'Hare International, on our way to Fairbanks, Alaska. We'll spend a few days there, then take the Alaska Railroad to Anchorage, spend a day or two there, then take the train to Seward on the 16th. There, we just spend a night, then board our cruise ship, Celebrity Summit, for our cruise along the Alaskan coast to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to spend a few days there before returning home. What makes this vacation special, is that we will be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary (yes 50th!), May the 19th, onboard. So, I'll catch you next, on our way to Alaska.... read more

Europe » Gibraltar June 28th 2023

We left Chipiona around 6pm, heading to my nephew Manuel's house in Facinas, which is fairly close to Gibraltar. We'd be spending two nights in his house, and going to Gibraltar tomorrow. We had a bit of trouble finding his house, since it was basically part of the farming outskirts, but we finally made it. His house may not look like much from the outside, but it was quite nice, with 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and a nice patio. We met his girlfriend, who was quite nice, and worked for a company that was determining the damage done by the wind turbines on birds. Manuel worked as an engineer for Airbus, so he could work anywhere, including from home. The next day we loaded up Consuelo's car, with people, and headed to Gibraltar. My brother-in-law ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Chipiona June 27th 2023

This morning we woke up, packed our stuff, turned in the key to our room, and headed to the bus station. We took bus number 1 to the bus station, arriving a bit early. We ate lunch at a cafeteria in the bus station. Manoli ate a pork soup and I had an order of shrimp pil pil. Both were pretty good. We boarded our bus around 2pm and headed to Chipiona, via Cadiz, and a few other stops. After a few stops in other places, we arrived at the Cadiz bus station around 5pm. We had about a half hour wait until the connecting bus to Chipiona. Finally the bus boarded and we got on for the last leg of our trip, to Chipiona, my wife's hometown. When we pulled into the Chipiona bus station, ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Málaga » Malaga June 27th 2023

Today was our last day in Malaga, so again we got up pretty late, and just wandered around town. We ate lunch at the Restaurant Malaka. We both ordered Ensaladilla and I ordered a shrimp pincho. The ensaladilla rusa was pretty good, although a bit sweet. The shrimp pincho was very good, and the only thing wrong with it was there wasn't enough. After lunch we wandered back to the pension to take a nap. We watched a movie and then about 7pm we decided to walk back down to the beach. We walked the whole beach, and stopped at a restaurant for dinner. I didn't take a picture, and I don't remember the name, but Manoli ordered ham and mushrooms and I ordered albondigas (meatballs). They were both quite good. After dinner, since we were ... read more
