I'm back home. I've been home for 2 days and finally able to function enough to make a to do list and start unpacking. Finishing this blog is top on my 'to do' list. If this last post doesn't get out today, it never will. I did start it at some point so here's what I got... The night we left Belfast I couldn't sleep trying to decide what to do in Dublin. One last night spent with Rick to make a plan for the next day and half.. We made it to Dublin from Belfast with only a quick rest stop along the way. Don was in his element here and gave us the grand tour of Dublin. He's very proud of this city. We went to Phoenix Park for a drive by of the ... read more

Our excursion was supposed to leave at 1:30 and last for 6 hours but we wanted to go earlier so we went down at 7:30 to try to go standby. We made it!!! We got down to the tender and wow, it was rough, but we got on. The ride to Dun Laoghaire was rough but not horrible. Once in Dun Laoghaire, we boarded the bus, but walking to the bus in the rain and wind was miserable. The bus ride into Dublin was about 30 minutes. We drove around a bit before stopping near Trinity College for a break for folks to shop or get a coffee. No one wanted to go out in the miserable weather. We headed upstairs to the coffee shop for a scone and diet coke. I looked at Facebook and ... read more

We started early this morning with a short walk back to the gardens at St Patrick’s Cathedral before breakfast. Bernie was keen to put the drone up to take a photo of the cathedral after starting it up yesterday and having it tell him that he COULD fly it in the area but needed to exercise caution. He chose not to fly it yesterday as there were too many people about but learnt last night that the gardens open at 7.30am. So, there we were at about 7.35am and the gates were not open. Damn! We walked down Bull Alley Street with Bernie planning to fly the drone over the fence to take a couple of photos. As he was unpacking it, I noticed that there were people inside the garden, and I offered to walk ... read more

First on the itinerary this morning was Christ Church Cathedral. The first church was built on this site in about 1030 by the Norse King Sitruic Silkbeard. The Anglo-Normans rebuilt and enlarged the church in the 12th and 13th centuries with it being elevated to a carthedral during this period. The cathedral underwent extensive restorations in the 1870s. Today the cathedral is a mixture of mediaeval and 19th century architecture. Using the Visitor Guide we explored the cathedral. The cathedral holds the tomb of Richard de Clare who was better known as Stongbow. He was one of the leaders of the Anglo-Normans who captured Dublin in 1170 commencing 800 years of British rule in Ireland. We worked our ways through the quire and the Chapel of St Laud admiring the original mediaeval tile on the floor. ... read more

This morning, we headed towards Dublin’s Georgian District in the south-eastern quadrant of the city. As we meandered in that direction, we passed St Werburgh’s Church and Dublin Castle. We will visit the castle another day but took the opportunity to venture into the courtyard this morning to take some photos before lots of tourists were about. As Dame Street merged into College Green we admired the Bank of Ireland building. It was challenging trying to take photos with end-to-end double decker busses motoring along the street! Perseverance paid off and photos of Ireland’s original Parliament Building were eventually taken. The bank has occupied the building since 1803 with Ireland’s Parliament being incorporated into the British Parliament in 1801. From the building that was once Parliament House we ventured around to Kildare Street where Leinster House ... read more

After our late dinner, which was almost a midnight snack, we both managed to sleep (doze) for quite a bit of the Melbourne to Dubai leg of our journey. This was despite having our overhead vents open to gale force to try to create a germ-free zone around us?? I HATE sitting in a draft but prepared to suffer it if I can arrive in Europe without picking up a bug. Only time will tell if it was worth it. To combat the cold draft we both wore beanies for much of the flight so looked like real weirdos. Fellow traveller, Steve, spotted our head wear and said that we looked like a couple of criminals hunched in our seats. We actually found that the Beanies doubled up well as eye masks if we pulled the ... read more

Because we chose to focus on museums for our last day, it meant we got a later start. Our breakfast crew went at 9am for our normal hotel buffet meal. Then after grabbing Alex, we walked to the National Ireland Museum area to check out our first museum of the day. First on the list was the Natural History Museum. We arrived a bit before opening which gave us time to catch our breath and observe the crowd. There was a dad taking photos of his son and daughter that you could tell were used to this treatment as they hugged and posed for the photo quick before jumping away to explore. A sign in front of the place explained the fact that this museum had been preserved as was developed in the past to help ... read more

Alex woke extra early due to a spontaneous nose bleed. He mostly caught it, only a few drops escaped to the pillow and duvet. I woke to him drinking his 3rd glass of water trying to hydrate to prevent future issues. As he was up so early, he joined Carl and I for breakfast. Already tired, I proposed an alternative plan to the 250 stair Skyview tower to instead heading into the park to see the Wellington Monument - a mini version of the Washington Monument but with added self-important murals of the first Duke of Wellington's achievements. Afterward, we walked in drizzled back to the hotel for a short rest as Alex's leg was sore again. Then we continued on to the Jameson Distillery Bow Street. Time for one drink before our tour, the group ... read more

Our Ireland travels begin a day earlier than our original plans. The direct flight from DFW had little odds of business class so we opted to fly the night before to CLT which put us as the top of the standby list enabled Alex to fit a couple meetings while we loitered in the Hilton hotel lobby before we left. At the airport, after a bit of walking back and forth due to gate changes, we found ourselves anxiously awaiting our seat assignments. Poor luck and totally clueless gate agents resulted in non-business and middle section aisle seats. I quickly hopped in line to get them to switch us to a window in hopes of some sleep for this redeye flight. Luckily, we ended up with a row ton ourselves. We stared diligently at the boarding ... read more

Forgot to mention on the last Blog, after the Jameson Whiskey tour we had dinner at the Brazen Head, reputed to be the oldest pub in Dublin, established in 1198. It was a cavernous place so probably had a few expansions over the past 1100 years. Undoubtedly there were few parallels to the original other than a few guys sitting at the bar; although the patrons of 1198 would be surprised with their 2024 peer group who were mainly looking at their phones as opposed to chatting with each other. We ordered Irish stew which was good but cost $30.00CDN per bowl!! Couldn’t find the inflation rate from 1192-2024 so unable to calculate what the stew would cost when the pub first opened. The third day in Dublin was warm and sunny which made the trip ... read more
