Choose Your Own Adventure Honeymoon -- Nova Scotia

Our honeymoon's going to be a surprise...at least I hope so, but I need some help!

My fiancee and I are getting married in May. Our honeymoon is going to be a surprise...at least I hope so. When we talked about honeymoon ideas, my fiancee thought it would be a great idea to have a "choose your own adventure" honeymoon. We want to stay in one place (maybe two, but probably not) with the potential to take day trips or excursions as we wish. We both like the outdoors, hiking, rafting, canoeing. We just generally like being outside. We love cool temperatures and I spent four months in Scotland during college and I hear it's pretty similar.

Should our daily excursions be planned in advance or would we be able to fly by the seat of our pants and figure it out when we get there? Where's the best place to stay for such an adventure?

I'm sure there are many places to stay where it's a possibility to explore different things from day to day while staying in one place, but I'm also sure that some are better than others. Any thoughts? How do you recommend getting around to the various excursions?

We also would love to have nice accomodations. We don't need five stars nor do we have the money for that, but we also don't really want to be camping out for the honeymoon. Any thoughts there?

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. We're up for an adventure and to spend a week in a beautiful part of the world. Reply to this

As fun as a choose your own adventure sounds, it could be pretty stressful once you get there. My advice would be to book your flights and hotels before you go, and research sightseeing opportunities that you think you would like. Then, once you get there, you can choose where to go and when, but you know that you have a pillow under your head each night at a place you would like--not the place you found after 20 phone calls and 3 hours of searching for an open room.

If you are looking for the Scotland-like atmosphere, Cape Breton Island is the place to go. Fly into Sydney, and you can stay there for pretty cheap. They have some really nice historic hotels that are reasonably priced as well. The hikes through the bluffs offer incredible views so take your camera, and take a jacket it can get pretty windy. If you like camping, you can completely get away with not booking and just showing up, if you're taking your honeymoon in May. It might be fun for a night or two. 😊 As far as accomodations, you should be able to get away with just booking the night then doing research once you're there. If you're used to this type of travel, it's fairly easy for the off-season in NS. It's generally how we travel.

We saw a bit of Nova Scotia last September, and loved it. As far as a good spot to stay put, I dunno that I can recommend just one! Some suggestions:

We loved the Fundy Coast...Spencer's Island was a great camping/picnic spot, and Cape d'Or is a spectacular sunset spot, also good to watch the tide go out. I believe Cape d'Or is also home to a few bed & breakfasts.

And as touristy as Peggy's Cove is, the locals are such lovely people...visit Niel's little watercolour shack near the lighthouse, or his studio in French Village and enjoy his stories. The whole area down there is full of cute bed & breakfasts, great scenic spots, and nice places to eat.

We also did Cape Breton and drove the Cabot Trail, and enjoyed the hiking there. Reply to this
