April 17th 2012 – Halifax, Nova Scotia Here we are – in Halifax, Nova Scotia!! We arrived in Halifax yesterday afternoon, to everyone's immense glee. We have just finished 7 days straight at sea, and it's safe to say we were all itching to get off the Balmoral for a while! The entry to Halifax is very picturesque, with the inlet lined with massive homes – however this soon gave way to a very commercial shipping area. It didn't matter, we were so glad to be here! A small pipe band was there to greet the ship, which was lots of fun. Disembarking the ship with our new friends Ian & Jen (from Canberra) and Don & Joc, we entered Pier 21 which is a mass of market-style shops which were open late especially for us. ... read more

We have had many anxious inquiries concerning our whereabouts during the “nor’easter” snow storm a few days ago. Amazingly enough, we missed the worst of it. We were in Halifax, and only received rain and big winds, so spent the day at the Maritimes Museum, oblivious to the havoc going on down the East coast. (Our last few days of travel have revealed snow in the ditches, and damage to trees and power lines, but it has been sunny and fairly warm, so was hard to picture 3 feet of snow and blizzard conditions a few days before.) We had a sunny but very windy day at Peggy’s Cove – almost got blown off the rocks at the lighthouse, and then the next day was very calm while we drove down the coast. We wake up to loud bagpipes playing!! It is 6:50am!! We are in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The bagpipes were a greeting!! Please……Henna—are these relatives of yours? We are awake so we get up, get our lattes and go up on the back deck. It is a partly cloudy day, about 49 degrees. It feels great to me. I am so glad it is cooler. We ate breakfast; say hello to Minnie, Jack, Richard and Janice. They tell us Bobbie, Annie and Denny ordered room service. I get some honey and chamomile tea and we go down to their room to give it to Annie. She is still running a fever and her throat is really sore. The Vicodin did not help. They have just finished breakfast and are getting ready to head off the ship. We ... read more

Looks like we are in with a bunch of people from the States. They seem very nice. One fellow arrived in the briefing room last night, took one look at us and said "Oh no, it's the bucket list brigade!" He's old too so it was taken well. Seems like he will be the joker of the party. It is an interesting time in our journey - finding out about our travelling companions. One fellow is what you might call - "mobility challenged". He seems like a good guy. His wife is the organiser and I overheard him saying, "Once she makes up her mind..." Another couple we met on the bus coming from the airport. Don said, "When I grow up I want to do what you are doing!" It doesn't look as if he ... read more

Well....the adventure begins again! Hank and I have arrived safely in Halifax after a very uneventful day of travelling, which is a good thing! Monday morning the driver team met up and we headed for the ferry. Monty and I tossed a coin for the Motorhome. He lost! Joke was on me cause I had to fuel my truck twice as much. Chaulking up the airmiles though! Dawn and I made it to the Ferry just in time...we took the scenic route. Cape Breton island was very beautiful. The ferry ride was about 6 hours. Very smooth tour. It was quite foggy porting in Port Aux Basque but thanks to Hank the Beacon we made it in safely! We spent the night here. We enjoyed a yummy pan fried cod dinner with scrunchins! Tuesday we carried ... read more

Today we got up and left for Peggy's Cove which is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay in Nova Scotia's Halifax Regional Municipality. Before we got there Leith reminded us that there are signs that say Don't Go Past Here and if we did we could possibly slip into the water and most likey die...like many others have. Yaaaa freak us out Leith lol but what he said was true. Peggy's Cove is one of the busiest tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and it took a few tries to get a photo without random people in the background but we did it! It was SUPER windy! Half our photos are with us eating our hair lol but it was worth it! We then ended up taking some great pics ... read more

Today we arrived in Halifax! The drive was great...beautiful rolling hills and farmland. The city itself is gorgeous! Lots of old historical buildings blended in with the new. Glenn Semaniuk (former TBT News Reporter) now working in sales for Halifax's The Bounce met up with us and we went Salty's Restaurant. Currently it's the Busker's Festival and a lot of performers were out ther doing their thing. I had lobster for the first time in my life! It was okay...lol We also went to the Lower Deck Pub which was sooo cool! The house band...Wrekhouse did amazing covers of everything from Kings of Leon to Van Morrison! AMAZING BAND! Tomorrow we are going to check out Kia Halifax Dealership for the Feed My Soul Food Drive...I have a special hat in honor of the Maritimes that ... read more

Of all the distance travelled during an adventure, it is often the last few kilometres that one remembers most vividly and fondly." The feeling of jagged stones being squeezed beneath a pair of spinning tires, the contrast of soft, moist leaves and sharp, rigid branches brushing against skin, or the taste of salty ocean air getting thicker by the minute; these are the sensations one can expect to experience while riding a bicycle down a rugged trail towards the coast, the finish line of a long, hard journey lying just around the next corner or two. I remember the screaming in my calves and the pounding of my heart – part exhaustion, part euphoria – but I remember just wanting to peddle faster no matter how much it hurt, just to savour the final moments of ... read more
